Presidential Commission for Women
Goal 1: Sustain and Enhance the quality of Undergraduate Programs
Subgoal 1: Continuous improvement of undergraduate education
Recommendation: Increase undergraduate student contact with mentors and role models from industry and academia (Also fulfills Goal 3: Strengthen and Develop Graduate Program).
Strategy 1: Maintain support of, and interactions with, the Presidential Council of Alumnae (PCA).
Strategy 2: Maintain funding of Visiting Scholar and Visiting Speaker Programs. Reevaluate in 2001.
Strategy 3: Invite one national speaker to campus.*
Strategy 4: Support the Womens History Month Reading Room.*
Strategy 5: Support the Womens History Month Poster Contest.*
Recommendation: Work with the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development to develop materials which would aid faculty in increasing awareness of gender issues.
Strategy 1: Invite Bill Kennedy and Bonnie Gorman (Orientation) to present at a PCW meeting.
Strategy 2: Investigate the Purdue gender awareness material for possible use at MTU.*
Recommendation: Sponsor a workshop that addresses health care issues for students.
Strategy 1: Work with Educational Opportunity to promote a Womens History Month Reading Room series that focuses on health issues.
Strategy 2: Appoint a task force and meet with Erin Carter and others to determine campus needs.
Subgoal 2: Assure the recruitment and retention of a high quality, diverse student body.
Recommendation: The PCW will support the MTU/CCISD/GOISD outreach for female students program.
Strategy 1: Continue to financially support the Girls + Math + Science = Choices Program for middle school girls.
Strategy 2: Continue to encourage increased university support for the Women in Engineering Program and other targeted group outreach programs.
Recommendation: Work to support and improve the near campus child care facility. (Also fulfills Goal 2, 3 and 5)
Strategy 1: Support the maintenance and future planning for the Child Care Center by maintaining PCW membership on the Child Care Advisory Board.
Strategy2: Asses the need for a new child care facility.
Strategy 3: If appropriate, promote the inclusion of funding for a Child Care Center as part of the Capital Campaign. Help lay groundwork for funding.
Recommendation: Review the status of implementation of the Womens Climate Study recommendations. (Also applies to Goals 1, 3, 5.)
Strategy1: Review and discuss the status of recommendations from each section of the climate study.
Strategy 2: Develop a set of prioritized recommendations and actions based on this review.
Goal 2: Attract and Retain, Support, and Develop Excellent Faculty
Recommendation: Work to support and improve the near campus child care facility.
Strategy 1: Support the maintenance and future planning for the Child Care Center by maintaining PCW membership on the Child Care Advisory Board.
Strategy 2: Assess the need for a new childcare building.
Strategy 3: If appropriate, promote the inclusion of funding for a Child Care Center as part of the Capital Campaign. Help lay groundwork for funding.
Recommendation: Support a major professional development opportunity at the Bryn Mawr Higher Education Institute or a similar educational experience.
Strategy 1: Promote and coordinate through Educational Opportunity the selection of one MTU faculty and one staff member to nominate for participation at the Bryn Mawr Higher Education Institute or another similar, appropriate educational experiences. (The Provosts Office maintains the budget for this activity.)
Recommendation: Sponsor a workshop that addresses health care issues for faculty.

Strategy 2: Encourage the Graduate School Office and Graduate Student Council (GSC) to offer seminars about maneuvering through graduate school with emphasis on developing research projects and becoming an excellent teacher.
Strategy 3: Invite GSC representatives to discuss graduate student concerns.
Goal 4: No recommendations at this time.
Goal 5: Attract, retain, support and develop excellent staff.
Recommendation: Work to support and improve the near campus child care facility.
Strategy 1: Support maintenance and future planning for the Child Care Center by maintaining PCW membership on the Child Care Advisory Board.
Strategy 2: Promote the inclusion of funding for a Child Care Center as part of the Capital Campaign. Help lay groundwork for funding.
Recommendation: Complete a second Equity Study to determine actual progress toward staff equity.
Strategy 1: Repeat an Equity Study under the direction of Affirmative Programs beginning fall, 1999.
Recommendation: Sponsor a workshop that addresses health care issues for staff.
Strategy 1: Work with Educational Opportunity to promote a Womens History Month Reading Room series that focuses on health issues.
Strategy 2: Appoint a task force to determine campus needed and meet with Erin Carter and others to determine campus needs.
Recommendation: Recommend that each year at least one supervisors workshop include a discussion of gender issues.
Recommendation: Assure participation of PCW members in Deans and higher searches.
Recommendation: Update statistics included in the original climate study.
Strategy 1: Continue the collection and review of statistics compiled in the first climate study.
